It’s no surprise that Vancouver is an extremely expensive place to live, but it’s gotten to the point where closets are being listed as dens, according to city councillor Melissa De Genova.
Some ads listed on Craigslist show very small rooms, which some are classifying as closets, for as much as $600 and $700 a month.
Vancouver rental housing advocate Rohana Rezel told CTV the listings are dangerous and inhumane.
“The people don’t even have space to get out of the bed,” she said. “If there were to be a fire in one of those buildings, the people sleeping in those rooms are going to be trapped.”
Due to the city’s homeless problem, De Genova finds herself in a tough position.
“The last thing we want to do is see more people become homeless so it is definitely about finding a balance,” De Genova explained.
Some of the ads have hangers taking up space and barely enough room for a bed.
Would you ever live in a closet for $700 a month? Or would you need to be the one being paid to do so? Let us know down below.
