Normally internet challenges are
controversial and dangerous. Some are for a good cause, but still
require an element of spectacle, such as the ice bucket challenge.
Now, the “Trashtag” challenge is here and people everywhere are
picking up trash and cleaning up their neighbourhoods.
The challenge went viral over the weekend and is executed by taking pictures of an area full of trash and then once again when everything is cleaned up. The photos are then posted to social media with the hashtag “trashtag”.
Buzzfeed reports the challenge originally started in 2015 by outdoor lighting company UCO. They used the tag to encourage people to pick up after themselves.
The tag has since seen a recent resurgence and the results speak for themselves.
There’s also been several posts by Canadians encouraging people to partake
With spring coming soon, do you think your city could benefit from trashtag being popular? Let us know.
