Coaches and players alike have been
suspended after a nasty brawl between the Acadia Axemen and the St.
FX X-Men in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
The brawl, that saw players fight along the benches started during the third period of Saturday’s game. Video of the melee was quickly uploaded online and went viral.
In total, six Acadia players and nine X-Men were suspended, with suspensions ranging from two games to five. In total, 39 games will be missed.
Any player that left the bench during
the brawl would receive an automatic two-game suspension.
“This whole situation is extremely disappointing,” AUS executive director Phil Currie said.
“These are institutions of higher learning and as university sport administrators, violence at our events is unacceptable. There is no place for fighting in university sport — be it in hockey, basketball, volleyball or any other sport.”
Atlantic University Sport will also be looking into what sparked the brawl. There are allegations that it was due to a derogatory comment related to a sexual assault survivor made to an X-Men player.
“These allegations are troubling, to say the least,” Currie said. “We will not tolerate comments of this nature or gendered insults of any kind in our league.”
What do you think of fighting in hockey? Is it just part of the game? We’d love to know what you think.
