An Ottawa family is devastated after being told to take down their outdoor hockey rink on its front lawn after a neighbour complained that it’s an “eyesore” that allegedly violates the city bylaws.
CTV reports that Cory Cosgrove built the rink years ago for his three daughters to enjoy. At first, a city bylaw officer told him that the boards of the rink were on city property, so he moved them back. Then a bylaw officer returned this week and told him the boards will have to come down.
“They say there’s not much they can do as far as having a slab of ice on your front yard for the kids to play on, but the structure itself is the issue,” Cosgrove said.
While many neighbours are fine with the rink, the neighbour who complained says she was never consulted before the walls were put up.
Greg Hill, a fellow neighbour defended the Cosgroves. “I guess the Grinch is out… We always talk about wanting kids to get outside more and have fun and this is how they do it. And if people have a problem with this sort of thing, it’s a shame that they can’t do it.”
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said he wants the case reviewed by his staff. “We are a hockey nation and what can be wrong with playing hockey in your own backyard,” he said on Twitter.
As for the Cosgrove girls who the rink was built for? Emma Cosgrove has a message to those who want the rink gone: “You’re ruining my Christmas.”
