Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer of the Chinese tech company Huawei was detained by Canadian officials in Vancouver on Saturday.
Huawei is one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies.
Wanzhou is set to be extradited to the United States for violating U.S. sanctions on Iran.
“The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng. The company believes the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion,” said a statement by the company.
The decision comes in light of recent efforts by President Donald Trump to achieve a “ceasefire” in the ongoing trade war between U.S. and China.
United States officials have claimed that Huawei and other smaller Chinese tech companies are a potential “security risk” and a possible avenue for spying by Chinese intelligence.
The Chinese government has claimed that the accusations are baseless and there is no evidence of state-led espionage.
Huawei has denied the charges and has said that they continue to cooperate with all of the U.S. sanctions and trade laws.
